Hygiene Services
Everybody knows that good dental hygiene is important. But regular brushing and flossing is not always enough to keep teeth and gums healthy.
Regular visits to our skilled hygienists can help prevent tooth and gum problems and keep your teeth looking and feeling healthy.
High Gloss Diamond Polish
Initially we use an ultra sonic scaler to remove the heavy deposits of calculus (tartar) with a special tip. The tip vibrates at a high rate and flushes out bacteria and deposits from below the gum with water. As the tip glides over the tooth surface it is much more effective at removing hard buildup and calcium deposits than hand scaling alone. It smooths out bumps and divots in the surface to prevent further buildup.
Then we gently hand scale removing any small pieces they have not removed. Hand scaling allows the dentist to carefully feel any small pieces of build-up missed during the ultrasonic treatments.
This is followed as an air flow, a fine jet of calcium carbonate powder smooth, soft & gentle to the tooth. This allows for efficient and faster stain removal.
Finally, the diamond polishing paste with minute particles of diamond for that silky smooth finish for a perfect smile.
Common Problems
Gingivitis
Nearly all adults suffer from Gingivitis (or ‘gum disease’) to some degree.
It is caused by a soft sticky substance called plaque that builds up along the gum line. Plaque is made up of harmful bacteria which can cause infections in your gums. This causes them to become red and puffy.
If plaque is not removed it hardens and forms calculus (also known as tartar) on your teeth. This leaves them discoloured, and can lead to further problems.
Tooth brushing alone cannot remove calculus. It requires specialist scaling by professional dentist or hygienist.
Bleeding when brushing or flossing your teeth is one of the earliest signs of gingivitis. At this early stage gum disease is reversible. Regular visits to the hygienist can clear away plaque build up and healthy gums.
Periodontitis
The infection moves into the deeper tissues of the tooth, eventually reaching the bone.
As the disease progresses it damages the bone supporting the teeth. Painful abscesses can form.
Teeth become loose and may eventually be lost.
Gums that have come away from the teeth
Pus between the teeth and gums
- Persistent bad breath or bad taste in the mouth
- Permanent teeth that are loose or changing position

The situation was unfortunately complicated and seemed to involve all manner of suggested maladies and problems, with little relief from painful teeth in the two and a bit years previously. Rory was patient, assured and knowledgeable. The studio is equipped with diagnostic tools that other dentists seemed not to have. Over a few weeks, and with an eventual intervention by the dental hospital we were able to resolve the most wearing of the problems. And with none of the alarming conditions or treatments that had been suggested as a solution before. I also have always had sensitive teeth and soft gums, and have some trouble breathing through my nose (not fun during a filling). Rory and Smile have made these things as easy as possible. Very happy to commmed . John Mcinally13/08/2024 When it comes to dentist, I’m absolutely petrified! I’ve seen Rory on two occasions now and he has been absolutely fantastic. Rory explained each step at the outset and was very patient with my endless questions. There were a couple of choices along the way and Rory helped me think through the best approach for me. End to end it was a great experience and the whole team at Smile were brilliant. I would highly recommend. T B29/03/2024 Being someone who’s pretty much scared of the dentist, it was with trepidation I entered into Smles Studio in Penarth. Rory was very understanding of my anxiety and I can honestly say i didn’t feel a thing having root canal work. Apart from relieving my pain, Rory did a good assessment of my teeth and came up with a plan. That plan was completed today and I am extremely happy that I can now smile without embarrassment. I would highly recommend. Many thanks. Kay Smith28/02/2024 The Best Dental Practice I have ever used!
