Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics) is needed when the nerve inside the tooth becomes infected through decay or trauma. You may not feel any pain in the early stages of the infection. In some cases, your tooth could darken in colour. This can mean that the tooth has died or is dying.
If the root canal is left untreated, a painful abscess may develop, and the infection could spread. A tooth with dead pulp will usually have to be removed.
Root canal treatment is designed to save the tooth rather than lose it. During the procedure, your dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth, and then seals it to prevent further infection. The treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so it is no more uncomfortable than having a routine filling. Once the tooth has settled, it is usually restored with a filling or crown to protect it and return it to full function. With good care, a treated tooth can last for many years.
