Treatment for Children

It is important that children visit the dentist regularly. This helps to promote good dental hygiene and the proper development of teeth and gums. Regular check-ups also let us spot small problems early, before they turn into something that needs bigger treatment.

Lots of children, and plenty of adults too, feel nervous about going to the dentist. The best way to help your child become comfortable with the dentist is to start bringing them along with you as early as possible. It helps them get used to the noises, smells and surroundings, and prepares them for their own visits later on.

Our team is used to working with children, so we have lots of experience in helping them feel happy and comfortable during treatment. If your child is particularly anxious, we can also talk you through our approach for nervous patients and, where it is appropriate, dental sedation.

For families who would prefer it, appointments are also available in Welsh.

Book your child in for a check-up at Smile Studio Penarth. You can book online or call us on 029 2070 8030, and we will confirm the cost before anything is booked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect when you bring your child to us, from first visits to mouthguards.

At what age should my child first see a dentist?

Bring your child along as soon as their first teeth come through, and ideally before their first birthday. Early visits are usually short and involve little more than a look and a chat. The aim is to get them used to the practice long before they need any treatment.

Is NHS dental treatment free for children?

NHS dental care is free for children in Wales, including check-ups. We provide NHS care for children at Smile Studio Penarth. Contact us to check current availability, as spaces can be limited, and we will confirm what is covered before your child’s first appointment.

How can I help my nervous child at the dentist?

Start bringing them along to your own appointments as early as you can, so the noises, smells and surroundings feel familiar. Keep the language positive and avoid words like ‘pain’ or ‘needle’. Our team are experienced with children, and we can also talk you through our approach for nervous patients.

Does my child need a sports mouthguard?

If your child plays rugby, martial arts, hockey or any contact sport, a mouth guard is worth having. A custom-made guard fits better and protects more effectively than a shop-bought one. Ours come in a wide range of colours and patterns, which makes children far more likely to wear them.

What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?

Call us straight away for an emergency appointment. If it is an adult tooth, hold it by the crown rather than the root, rinse it gently in milk, and put it back in the socket if you can. If not, keep it in milk and bring it with you.
